NFL Win/Loss Record HistoryIn this article from Football Perspective, this question was posed:
“Wondering if you’ve ever tracked or how it would be possible to find records vs. records statistics….for instance a 3-4 team vs. a 5-2 team…which record wins how often? but for every record matchup in every week.” I decided to gather the data, and the program below will give the answer for any matchup you’re curious about. Just enter in the record of the matchup you want to analyze, and it will tell you how that matchup has gone historically.
For example, in the initial question, he asks how 3-4 teams do against 5-2 teams. Enter that in below, and you’ll see the 5-2 team has won 23 times out of 39 possible games (59%). All data is since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 through the 2019 season. Ties are ignored. There are some interesting outliers in the data. For example, teams that are 2-5 usually beat teams that are 4-3. They’ve won 21 times out of 40 (53%). Updated through the 2019 season.
